Background
Medical coding is the process of ingesting “what was done” on a patient record and making sure it’s paid for correctly. Historically, this is a very manual process where teams of people with clinical experience comb through patient charts to find one code. Change Healthcare wanted to equip coders with a tool to help - harnessing the power of Natural Language Processing.
Methods
Using in-depth interviews, my team performed multiple rounds of research including foundational research to inform “what to build” and evaluative research to guide “how to build it.” Insights were gathered from coders and coding management teams.
